Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Toxicology and Epigenetics

Are you interested in working on a multidisciplinary project about the toxicity of new battery components in a pleasant, dynamic, and international environment? The research group for Molecular Toxicology and Epigenetics (link (https://www.uu.se/institution/organismbiologi/forskning/fysiologi-och-miljotoxikologi/forskargrupper/ruegg-labb)) at the Department of Organism Biology, in collaboration with the Structural Chemistry research program at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher who wants to contribute to safe and sustainable technological development.

The EpiTox group is part of the research program link (https://www.uu.se/institution/organismbiologi/forskning/fysiologi-och-miljotoxikologi), a growing and dynamic research environment where experimental models and molecular tools are used to study and understand cellular and molecular mechanisms in animals and plants that underlie the physiology, development, and environmental responses of entire organisms. The Structural Chemistry research program has for many years hosted and focused on research and development of materials and their applications in the energy storage field through the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, evaluate and improve them regarding battery performance and sustainability, and study fundamental chemical processes and properties using both experimental and computational methods.

Job Responsibilities

You will design and perform in vitro toxicity analyses of chemicals and chemical mixtures used in the development of new batteries within the Structural Chemistry research program. Responsibilities include selecting relevant tests based on literature and, if possible, in silico predictions, study design, conducting laboratory tests, and analyzing and interpreting results.

Additional responsibilities include participating in regular meetings and presenting progress and results to participants in the multidisciplinary project, writing scientific publications, participating in international meetings and conferences, and supervising students at various educational levels.

You are expected to perform your tasks independently and engage in the scientific and social activities of the two research environments: within the Physiology and Environmental Toxicology program and within the Structural Chemistry research program at the two departments.

Qualifications

A PhD or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in environmental toxicology or other fields that the employer considers equivalent. The degree must be obtained at the time of the employment decision. Those who have obtained their PhD no more than three years before the application deadline will be given priority for the position. The starting point for this three-year period is the last application date. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period may be extended due to circumstances such as illness, parental leave, union duties, etc.

Well-documented experience with chemical testing using cellular or whole-organism in vitro models and knowledge in environmental toxicology is required. Since the work will be conducted in an international and multidisciplinary environment, excellent oral and written skills in English are required.

Significant emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities. We are looking for a highly motivated person with original, creative, and analytical thinking as well as good collaboration skills. The applicant is expected to take initiative and work independently.

Desirable/meritorious

Experience with in silico methods for toxicity prediction and knowledge in inorganic chemistry in general and battery chemistry in particular is meritorious.

About the Employment

The position is temporary for 2 years according to the central collective agreement with the possibility of extension for an additional year. The scope is 100%. Start date by agreement. Location: Uppsala
